This used Chevy Tahoe review covers the 2015 to 2022 model years for Texas buyers. The Tahoe is my favorite vehicle, so I held it to the same rule as every other review on this site: public data only. In NHTSA's records, the 2018, 2019 and 2020 Tahoes have the fewest complaints and recall campaigns, and the 2020 has the fewest complaints of all. The 2015 and the 2021, each the first year of its design, have the most of both. If I were shopping, I would start with a 2018 to 2020, look at a 2022 with every campaign closed, and treat a 2015 or 2021 with extra care. Run the VIN for open recalls and get an inspection either way.

The evidence here is public data only: NHTSA recall, complaint and crash-test records pulled from api.nhtsa.gov on November 5, 2026, EPA fuel economy from fueleconomy.gov, and warranty terms from Chevrolet. No owner reviews, no invented reliability scores and no prices.

## Chevy Tahoe years for used buyers: 2015 to 2022

The 2015 to 2022 span covers two designs. You can see the break clearly in the engine and transmission data on [fueleconomy.gov](https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/findacar.shtml) .

### 2015 to 2020

Every year has a 5.3-liter V8 with a 6-speed automatic, in rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. From 2018, fueleconomy.gov also lists a 6.2-liter V8 that takes premium fuel and uses a 10-speed automatic. This is the design that NHTSA rates at 4 stars overall in every year, and its last three years are the quietest in the complaint data.

### 2021 to 2022

The 2021 model year brought the current-shape Tahoe. fueleconomy.gov lists the 5.3 and 6.2 V8s, both now with a 10-speed automatic, and a new option: a 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel. The first year of this design, 2021, is also the year with the most recall campaigns in the span (16) and the second-most complaints (465).

## Used Tahoe review by year: recalls, complaints and crash ratings

From NHTSA records pulled November 5, 2026. The recall column counts campaigns that list the model year. Many cover only one engine, drive type or build window, and some started as police-vehicle or diesel-only campaigns. "Unknown or other" is skipped when naming the top component.

| Model year | Recall campaigns | Owner complaints | Crash / fire complaints | Top named complaint component (count) | NHTSA overall rating |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 2015 | 14 | 663 | 30 / 2 | Service brakes (200) | 4 stars |
| 2016 | 8 | 257 | 17 / 1 | Service brakes (93) | 4 stars |
| 2017 | 4 | 175 | 3 / 1 | Power train (53) | 4 stars |
| 2018 | 3 | 105 | 6 / 0 | Power train and engine (20 each) | 4 stars |
| 2019 | 2 | 109 | 8 / 0 | Power train (39) | 4 stars |
| 2020 | 3 | 57 | 4 / 0 | Engine and power train (14 each) | 4 stars |
| 2021 | 16 | 465 | 9 / 3 | Engine (171) | 4 stars |
| 2022 | 4 | 198 | 3 / 3 | Engine (76) | 4 stars |

NHTSA rates both the two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive Tahoe 4 stars overall and 3 stars for rollover in every year listed. A 3-star rollover rating is common for a tall, body-on-frame SUV. Compare years within the Tahoe rather than across brands: a popular vehicle with many owners collects more complaints. My guide to [reading NHTSA complaint data](https://texas.huntautogroup.com/guides/how-to-read-nhtsa-complaint-data/) explains why. Check any VIN on [NHTSA's recalls page](https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls) .

## The Tahoe recalls that matter most

These are the campaigns I would confirm first, using NHTSA's component names.

### 2015 to 2020

- **Brake vacuum pump (19V645000), 2015-2018.** The vacuum created by the pump may decrease over time. A related campaign (20V603000) covers 2018 Tahoes with the 5.3 or 6.2 V8. Service brakes lead the complaints for 2015 and 2016, and "vacuum pump" appears in 65 of the 2015 complaints, so this is first on my list.

- **Transfer case (26V289000), 2015-2020 four-wheel drive.** This campaign is from May 2026. A component missing from the transfer case may cause the front and/or rear wheels to lock up without warning. Because it is so recent, a Tahoe that looked clean last year may have this open recall now.

- **Wheel speed sensor and driveline protection (19V761000), 2015-2020 with the 5.3, a 3.08 rear axle and four-wheel drive.** If a wheel speed sensor fails between 41 and 60 mph in four-wheel or automatic mode, the brake module may activate driveline protection.

- **Electric power steering (14V719000 and 18V586000), 2015.** Steering assist may be lost for a moment and then return suddenly. Steering is a top-five complaint component for 2015.

- **Front air bags (16V651000), 2015-2017,** and **front upper control arms (16V256000), 2016.** Confirm both on those years.

- **Fuel pump (19V837000), 2020.** The fuel pump may be missing a pressure regulator.

### 2021 to 2022

- **Engine connecting rods and crankshaft (25V274000), 2021-2022 with the 6.2 V8.** Manufacturing defects in these parts can lead to engine damage and engine failure. On any 6.2, I want proof this one is done.

- **Fuel pump power control module (21V739000), 2021.** The module may cause the fuel pump to fail or work intermittently, which can stall the engine. "Fuel pump" appears in 79 of the 2021 complaints and "stall" in 63.

- **Transmission control valve, rear wheels locking (24V797000 for 2021 diesels; 26V085000 for 2022 with the 10-speed and electronic shifter).** The valve may fail and lock up the rear wheels.

- **Fuel tank (21V064000), 2021.** The tank shell may be missing adhesive between its layers, which may cause a fuel leak. A separate campaign (25V619000) covers some diesel Tahoes that got a replacement tank.

- **Power steering software (21V455000), 2021.** Power steering assist may be lost at startup or while driving.

- **Third-row seat belts (21V190000 for 2021; 22V617000 for 2021-2022).** The outboard belts may be trapped, or the rivet that holds a buckle may be weak. If the third row will carry kids, these come first.

- **Rear driveshaft (22V036000), 2021.** Internal driveshaft parts may be faulty.

## Chevy Tahoe problems owners report most

**2015 to 2016:** Service brakes lead both years (200 and 93), and the complaint text often mentions the brake pedal and the vacuum pump. Steering is high in 2015. Transmission complaints start to grow in 2016.

**2017 to 2020:** Totals fall each year to the lowest in the span (57 in 2020). Power train and the transmission lead the text, with fewer brake complaints. In 2019, fuel pump and stalling show up more often (15 and 16 complaints).

**2021 to 2022:** Engine is the top component both years (171 and 76). In the 2021 text, the most common themes are the fuel pump (79), the check engine light (64), lifters (65), stalling (63) and the transmission (60). In 2022 the totals drop, and check engine light, shifting and stalling lead. The lifter theme is not the subject of a recall in this data; the 6.2 connecting rod and crankshaft campaign is the closest engine recall, and it applies only to that engine.

## Tahoe MPG and specs by engine

EPA ratings from [fueleconomy.gov](https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/findacar.shtml) for the standard Tahoe (police and special service versions excluded). Ranges cover the versions listed.

| Engine | Years | Transmission | 2WD city / hwy / combined | 4WD combined |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 5.3L V8 | 2015-2020 | 6-speed auto | 15-16 / 22-23 / 18-19 | 17-18 |
| 6.2L V8 (premium) | 2018-2020 | 10-speed auto | 14 / 23 / 17 | 17 |
| 5.3L V8 | 2021-2022 | 10-speed auto | 15-16 / 20 / 17-18 | 16-18 |
| 6.2L V8 (premium) | 2021-2022 | 10-speed auto | 14-15 / 20 / 16-17 | 16 |
| 3.0L diesel six | 2021-2022 | 10-speed auto | 21 / 28 / 24 | 22 |

The diesel is the efficiency pick, especially on the highway. The 6.2 needs premium fuel, which adds to the cost of every fill-up in a vehicle this size.

## Is any Chevrolet factory warranty left?

[Chevrolet's warranty page](https://www.chevrolet.com/owners/warranty) describes bumper-to-bumper coverage of 3 years or 36,000 miles and says powertrain coverage typically lasts 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. On a 2015-2021 Tahoe these have almost certainly expired. A low-mileage 2022 that went into service late may still have some powertrain coverage. Ask the seller for the in-service date and confirm the terms for that model year with a Chevrolet dealer. Recall repairs are free at a Chevrolet dealer regardless of warranty.

## Texas notes for Tahoe owners

**Heat.** A big SUV parked outside through Central Texas summers works its AC, cooling system and battery hard, and the Tahoe has a lot of cabin to cool. Test the AC from a hot start, including the rear vents, and check the battery date. My [used cars and Texas heat guide](https://texas.huntautogroup.com/guides/used-cars-and-texas-heat/) has the full list. [fueleconomy.gov's hot weather page](https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/hotweather.shtml) notes AC use can cut a conventional vehicle's fuel economy by more than 25% in very hot conditions, especially on short trips.

**I-35 commuting.** The gas V8s rate 16 to 19 combined. If the Tahoe will spend most of its life on I-35 between Austin, San Marcos and San Antonio, the 2021-2022 diesel rates 22 to 24 combined on paper.

**Towing.** If you tow a boat to Canyon Lake or a trailer to the ranch, the transfer case and driveline campaigns on 2015-2020 and the transmission valve campaigns on 2021-2022 come first. Check the hitch, wiring and brake controller, and confirm the tow rating for that exact configuration in Chevrolet's specifications for the model year and on the door-jamb label rather than a listing.

**Flood history.** Big SUVs are common in flood-prone parts of Texas. Check for silt, rust and damp carpet under the third row and in the cargo well, and read my guide on [how to spot a flood-damaged car](https://texas.huntautogroup.com/guides/how-to-spot-a-flood-damaged-car/) .

**Emissions counties.**[TCEQ](https://www.tceq.texas.gov/airquality/mobilesource/vim/overview.html) requires a yearly emissions test before registration for gasoline vehicles 2 through 24 years old in Travis and Williamson counties, and in Bexar County starting November 1, 2026. Diesel vehicles are not tested. Hays, Comal, Guadalupe and Caldwell are not on the list. More in my [inspection and emissions guide](https://texas.huntautogroup.com/guides/texas-vehicle-inspection-and-emissions-rules/) .

## Best years: the Tahoes I would shortlist, and the ones I would check extra carefully

My opinion, based only on the data shown here.

### Years I would shortlist

- **2020 Chevy Tahoe.** The fewest complaints in the span (57), 4 crash complaints and three campaigns. On a four-wheel-drive Tahoe, confirm the May 2026 transfer case campaign.

- **2018 and 2019 Chevy Tahoe.** Two or three campaigns each and around 105 to 109 complaints. Same transfer case check on four-wheel-drive versions, and the brake vacuum pump campaigns on a 2018.

- **2022 Chevy Tahoe.** The newer design with four campaigns and far fewer complaints than 2021 (198 against 465). Engine complaints still lead, so I would want service records, a mechanic's listen at cold start and, on a 6.2, proof the engine campaign is done.

### Years I would check extra carefully

- **2015 Chevy Tahoe.** The most complaints in the span (663), the most crash complaints (30) and 14 campaigns, with service brakes leading by a wide margin. Confirm the brake vacuum pump and power steering campaigns.

- **2021 Chevy Tahoe.** The first year of the newer design: 16 campaigns, 465 complaints, and engine and fuel pump complaints leading. On a 6.2, the connecting rod and crankshaft campaign is essential.

## Pre-purchase inspection checklist for a used Tahoe

Use this with my general pre-purchase inspection checklist.

1. Run the VIN on [NHTSA's recall lookup](https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls) and ask a Chevrolet dealer for completed recalls. Re-check close to purchase, since the transfer case campaign is new.

1. Confirm the exact engine, transmission, axle ratio and drive from the build sheet or a dealer lookup.

1. Test the brake pedal with the engine running and after several stops. It should be firm, and assist should not fade.

1. Start the engine cold with the hood open and have a mechanic listen for ticking or knocking, especially on 2021-2022 V8s.

1. Drive through all gears in traffic and on the highway; note harsh shifts, shudder or hesitation.

1. On four-wheel-drive Tahoes, engage four-wheel and auto modes and watch for warning lights.

1. Fold and use the third row, and buckle every third-row belt.

1. Test the AC from a hot start, front and rear, and check the battery.

1. If it tows, check the hitch, wiring and trailer brake output.

1. Look under the third row and in the cargo area for silt or rust.

1. Check the title through [TxDMV Title Check](https://www.txdmv.gov/motorists/buying-or-selling-a-vehicle/title-check-look-before-you-buy) for salvage, flood or buyback brands.

## Frequently asked questions

**What are the best years for a used Chevy Tahoe?**

Based on NHTSA data for 2015-2022, the 2018, 2019 and 2020 have the fewest complaints and recall campaigns, and the 2020 has the fewest complaints (57). Neither guarantees a good Tahoe, so inspect it and check its recall history.

**Which Tahoe years have the most problems in NHTSA data?**

The 2015 has the most complaints (663) and the 2021 has the most recall campaigns (16) with 465 complaints. Both were early years of their design in this span.

**What is the most common Tahoe complaint?**

For 2015-2016, service brakes lead. For 2017-2020, power train and the transmission lead. For 2021-2022, engine leads, and the 2021 text often mentions the fuel pump, lifters and stalling.

**What MPG does a used Tahoe get?**

On fueleconomy.gov, the gas V8 versions rate 16 to 19 combined, and the 2021-2022 diesel rates 22 to 24 combined.

**Does a used Tahoe need an emissions test in Texas?**

A gasoline Tahoe needs one in Travis and Williamson counties, and in Bexar County from November 1, 2026, per TCEQ. Diesel vehicles are not tested.

**How safe is a used Tahoe?**

NHTSA rates the 2015-2022 Tahoe 4 stars overall and 3 stars for rollover, in both two-wheel and four-wheel drive.
