For a used Ram 1500 vs Ford F-150 from 2015 to 2022, here is my honest read of the public data. If you tow heavy, start with the F-150: it has more engine choices, official towing figures I could confirm, and lower curb weights cab for cab. If you mostly drive empty on the highway, the Ram's 3.0L diesel has the best EPA combined rating in this comparison (up to 26 mpg), and 2019 to 2021 Ram crew cabs earn 5 stars overall from NHTSA, the same as F-150 SuperCrews from 2015 to 2020. Either way, the model year matters more than the badge: the 2019 Ram (30 recall campaigns) and the 2021 F-150 (29) are the recall-heaviest years of each truck.

The evidence is public data only: NHTSA recall, complaint and crash-test records pulled from api.nhtsa.gov on November 5, 2026, EPA ratings from fueleconomy.gov, and size and weight records from Transport Canada through NHTSA's vPIC database. For F-150 towing I use Ford's own documents, the same ones in my [F-150 vs Silverado comparison](https://texas.huntautogroup.com/guides/ford-f-150-vs-chevrolet-silverado-1500/) . I did not include Ram horsepower or towing figures because I have not confirmed them from Stellantis' official media site. No owner reviews, no reliability scores and no prices.

## Quick comparison

| NHTSA rollover | 3 or 4 stars (2015-2018, 2022 Classic); 4 stars (2019-2021) | 4 stars every year |

You can also compare them side by side by year.

## The generations you are shopping

**Ram 1500.** Transport Canada's size records show two bodies. The older one starts in 2009 and covers the 2015 to 2018 Ram 1500. A newer, longer body record starts in 2018 and covers model years 2019 on. From 2019, the older body keeps appearing under the name Ram 1500 Classic, with the same dimensions as before. So a "2020 Ram 1500" in a listing can be either truck. Check the VIN and the badge. In EPA listings, the 3.6L V6 and 3.0L diesel use an 8-speed automatic, and the 5.7L V8 appears with a 6-speed or an 8-speed. Hybrid versions of the 3.6L and 5.7L show up from 2019; Ram's recall notices mention a 5.7L eTorque engine and, on some 2019 trucks, a 48-volt auxiliary battery.

**Ford F-150.** One body record covers 2015 to 2020 and a new one starts in 2021, the redesign. The Raptor has its own wider record from 2017, and the electric Lightning appears from 2022. EPA listings add the 3.3L V6 and 3.0L diesel in 2018 and the 3.5L hybrid in 2021, with 6-speed and 10-speed automatics.

## NHTSA reliability record by year

From NHTSA, pulled November 5, 2026. Recalls count campaigns that list the model year. Many cover only one engine or build window. Owner complaints are unverified reports filed with NHTSA, not reviews, and a truck that sells in big numbers collects more of them. Compare years within each truck, not one brand against the other. My guide to [reading NHTSA complaint data](https://texas.huntautogroup.com/guides/how-to-read-nhtsa-complaint-data/) explains why.

### Ram 1500

| Model year | Recall campaigns | Complaints | Crash / fire complaints | Top named complaint component | NHTSA overall |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 2015 | 18 | 1,461 | 79 / 58 | Steering (342) | 4 stars |
| 2016 | 17 | 1,562 | 92 / 36 | Steering (315) | 4 stars |
| 2017 | 13 | 885 | 80 / 16 | Steering (230) | 4 stars |
| 2018 | 15 | 667 | 25 / 8 | Electrical system (159) | 4 stars |
| 2019 | 30 | 1,497 | 76 / 11 | Electrical system (382) | 4 stars Quad Cab, 5 stars Crew Cab |
| 2020 | 14 | 644 | 24 / 7 | Electrical system (166) | 4 stars Quad Cab, 5 stars Crew Cab |
| 2021 | 15 | 686 | 27 / 4 | Engine (277) | 4 stars Quad Cab, 5 stars Crew Cab |
| 2022 | 16 | No data returned | - | - | 4 stars (Classic Crew Cab and Quad Cab) |

Rollover ratings are 3 or 4 stars for 2015 to 2018 and for the 2022 Classic, and 4 stars for 2019 to 2021.

### Ford F-150

| Model year | Recall campaigns | Complaints | Top named complaint component | NHTSA overall |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 2015 | 14 | No data returned | - | 5 stars (Regular Cab, SuperCrew) |
| 2016 | 14 | 114 | Power train (91) | 5 stars (Regular Cab, SuperCrew) |
| 2017 | 18 | 84 | Power train (57) | 5 stars (Regular Cab, Crew Cab) |
| 2018 | 19 | 97 | Power train (68) | 4 stars Regular Cab, 5 stars SuperCrew |
| 2019 | 9 | 71 | Power train (53) | 4 stars Regular Cab, 5 stars SuperCrew |
| 2020 | 11 | 59 | Power train (42) | 4 stars Regular Cab, 5 stars SuperCrew |
| 2021 | 29 | No data returned | - | 5 stars (Regular Cab, SuperCab) |
| 2022 | 23 | No data returned | - | 5 stars (Regular Cab, SuperCab) |

The F-150 rates 4 stars for rollover in every year listed. Both crash tables show up to four tested versions per year, in 2WD and 4WD, so a cab you are looking at may not appear here.

Our pull returned no F-150 complaints for 2015, 2021 and 2022, so treat the F-150 complaint counts as partial. [NHTSA's ratings page](https://www.nhtsa.gov/ratings) has every tested version. Look up any year on the [Ram 1500 data page](https://texas.huntautogroup.com/cars/ram-1500/) or the [Ford F-150 data page](https://texas.huntautogroup.com/cars/ford-f-150/) .

## The recalls that matter

The campaigns I would confirm first, in NHTSA's wording, shortened.

### Ram 1500

- **3.0L diesel (several campaigns).** Crankshaft position sensor tone wheel may delaminate and stall the engine (20V475000, 23V411000). EGR cooler may crack and let coolant combust in the intake manifold (19V757000). High-pressure fuel pump may fail (22V406000 for 2014-2019, 22V767000 for 2020-2022, 23V263000 for 2022-2023). On a diesel Ram, I want proof all of these are closed.

- **Side curtain air bag inflators.** May rupture or come apart (21V632000 for the 2015-2020 Classic; 25V010000 for 2016-2019; 25V592000 for 2018; 25V824000 for the 2019 Classic). Three of these date from 2025, so a truck that was clean before may have one open now.

- **Steering.** Loss of power steering assist (16V167000 for 2015-2016; 19V020000 and 19V812000 for 2019). On some 2019 trucks, steering column stub shafts may break and the steering wheel may detach (19V201000).

- **Power locking tailgate.** May unlatch and open while driving (18V486000, 19V347000 on older trucks; 22V904000 for 2019-2022).

- **Driveline.** Incorrectly heat-treated rear axles (15V661000), front halfshafts (16V301000), differential pin screw (17V198000), rear driveshaft welds (19V324000) and underfilled rear differential (18V556000). On 2019 4WD trucks, a transfer case gear may leave the truck stuck in neutral (20V080000).

- **Air bags and belts on the newer truck.** Occupant restraint controller memory may disable air bags (19V407000, 2019-2020), the driver air bag may not be connected (25V298000), and second-row belt anchors may be installed wrong (26V495000, reported July 30, 2026, for 2019-2026).

- **2021 5.7L eTorque.** Engine control software may cause a stall (23V265000).

### Ford F-150

- **Doors and belts, 2015-2017.** Doors may open while driving because of a kinked cable or frozen latch (17V652000). A seat belt pretensioner may throw sparks that ignite carpet or insulation (18V568000, 2015-2018).

- **Brake master cylinder on 3.5L EcoBoost trucks.** May leak fluid into the brake booster (20V332000, 22V150000, 25V236000).

- **Transmission.** Unexpected downshift into second gear (26V237000, April 2026, 2015-2017). Several 10-speed campaigns on 2017-2020 trucks for a shift pin, a park roll pin and shift cable clips (17V671000, 18V213000, 18V214000, 20V197000). On 2021 trucks, false low-pressure codes may shift the transmission into neutral (22V188000), and the park pawl may engage while moving (26V402000, June 2026).

- **2021-2022 engine and driveline.** Intake valves may break on 2.7L EcoBoost engines (24V635000). Driveshaft campaigns (21V381000, 21V986000, 22V623000) and a steering gear campaign (21V407000).

- **2021-2022 trailer brakes.** A software error may leave a trailer without brakes (22V193000, 25V132000), and the trailer module may lose communication (26V104000, February 2026).

- **Repeat repairs.** Several newer F-150 campaigns cover trucks "previously repaired incorrectly" under an older recall (for example 26V370000, 26V373000, 26V375000, 25V169000). A finished recall on paper may still have a newer one open.

Run every VIN at [nhtsa.gov/recalls](https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls) and read [how to check recalls before buying a used car](https://texas.huntautogroup.com/guides/how-to-check-recalls-before-buying-a-used-car/) .

## What owners report most

**Ram 1500.** In 2015 to 2017, steering leads, and the word "steering" appears in 359, 324 and 228 complaints. In 2018 the theme moves to screens (109) and cameras (68). The 2019 complaints mention steering (360), brakes (188), shifting (158), leaks (154) and the battery (93). In 2021, the engine is the top component (277), and complaint text mentions brakes in 200 complaints and stalling in 135.

**Ford F-150.** Power train is the top component in every year we have, 2016 to 2020. The text is mostly about shifting and the transmission: in 2016, 79 of 114 complaints mention "shift" and 76 mention "transmission." "Frame" appears in 36 complaints for 2016 and 25 for 2017.

## EPA MPG by engine

City / highway / combined from [fueleconomy.gov](https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/findacar.shtml) , as ranges across versions. Police and chassis versions are excluded.

| Truck | Engine | Years | Fuel | City / hwy / combined |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Ram 1500 | 3.0L diesel | 2015-2023 | Diesel | 19-23 / 26-33 / 22-26 |

| Ford F-150 | 2.7L V6 | 2015 on | Regular | 17-20 / 21-26 / 19-22 |
| Ford F-150 | 3.3L V6 | 2018-2023 | Regular | 17-20 / 22-25 / 19-22 |
| Ford F-150 | 3.5L V6 | 2015 on | Regular | 14-18 / 16-25 / 15-21 |
| Ford F-150 | 5.0L V8 | 2015 on | Regular | 14-17 / 19-25 / 16-20 |
| Ford F-150 | 3.0L diesel | 2018-2021 | Diesel | 20-22 / 25-30 / 22-25 |
| Ford F-150 | 3.5L V6 hybrid | 2021 on | Regular | 22-25 / 23-26 / 23-25 |

The Ram's diesel is the most efficient engine here on paper. And the Ram's 5.7L V8 is listed on midgrade fuel, while the F-150's 5.0L V8 is listed on regular and rates higher.

## Size and weight

From Transport Canada records through NHTSA's vPIC, rounded. Ranges cover the cab and bed versions listed; Raptor, police and electric versions are left out.

| Truck and years | Length | Width | Wheelbase | Curb weight |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Ram 1500 2015-2018 (and Classic from 2019) | 206-235 in | 79 in | 120-149 in | 4,511-5,386 lb |
| Ram 1500 2019 on (Quad and Crew Cab) | 229-242 in | 80-82 in | 141-154 in | 4,799-5,232 lb |
| F-150 2015-2020 | 207-249 in | 80 in | 122-164 in | 4,050-4,930 lb |
| F-150 2021-2023 | 207-248 in | 80 in | 123-164 in | 4,019-4,996 lb |

Cab for cab, the F-150 is lighter. A 2021-2023 F-150 SuperCrew with the 5.5-foot box and 4x4 weighs about 4,705 lb; a 2019-on Ram crew cab with the 5.7-foot box and 4x4 weighs about 5,130 lb.

## Texas notes

**Heat and AC.** Both trucks sit outside through long Central Texas summers. Test the AC from a hot start and check the battery, especially on a 2019 Ram with the 48-volt auxiliary battery. [fueleconomy.gov's hot weather page](https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/hotweather.shtml) notes AC use can cut a conventional vehicle's fuel economy by more than 25% in very hot conditions, especially on short trips. More in my [used cars and Texas heat guide](https://texas.huntautogroup.com/guides/used-cars-and-texas-heat/) .

**I-35 commuting.** Between Austin, San Marcos and San Antonio, the Ram diesel (22-26 combined) and the F-150 hybrid (23-25) rate best on paper. Most V8 versions rate 14 to 20 combined.

**Towing in the Hill Country.** Ford lists 13,200 lbs. for a properly equipped 2018 F-150 and 14,000 lbs. for a 2021 F-150 with the 3.5L EcoBoost in a specific SuperCab or SuperCrew 4x2 setup with the Max Trailer Tow Package ([2018 specs](https://www.fromtheroad.ford.com/content/dam/fordmediasite/us/en/library/2018/specs/2018-F-150-Technical-Specs.pdf) , [2021 towing guide](https://www.ford.com/content/dam/brand_ford/en_us/brand/resources/general/pdf/guides/21Towing_Ford_F150_r4_Oct20.pdf) ). A typical used truck is rated lower. For either truck, read the door-jamb label before you hitch a boat for Canyon Lake. On a 2021-2022 F-150, confirm the trailer brake campaigns; on a Ram, the driveline and transfer case campaigns.

**Flood.** A tall truck still floods at a low-water crossing. Run [TxDMV Title Check](https://www.txdmv.gov/motorists/buying-or-selling-a-vehicle/title-check-look-before-you-buy) and read [how to spot a flood-damaged car](https://texas.huntautogroup.com/guides/how-to-spot-a-flood-damaged-car/) .

**Emissions counties.**[TCEQ](https://www.tceq.texas.gov/airquality/mobilesource/vim/overview.html) requires a yearly emissions test before registration for gasoline vehicles 2 through 24 years old in Travis and Williamson counties, and in Bexar County starting November 1, 2026. Diesel vehicles are not tested. Hays, Comal, Guadalupe and Caldwell are not on the list. See my [inspection and emissions guide](https://texas.huntautogroup.com/guides/texas-vehicle-inspection-and-emissions-rules/) .

## Which one I would pick for which use

My opinion, based only on the data above.

| You are | I would start with |
| --- | --- |
| Towing heavy most weekends | An F-150 whose door-jamb rating clears your trailer with room to spare, with the 2021-2022 trailer brake campaigns closed |
| Commuting long distances empty | A Ram 3.0L diesel with every diesel campaign closed, or a 2021-2022 F-150 hybrid |
| Wanting a simple V8 | F-150 5.0L (regular fuel, 16-20 combined) over the Ram 5.7L (midgrade, 14-17) on paper |
| Hauling a family in a crew cab | A 2020 Ram crew cab (5 stars, the fewest Ram complaints at 644) or a 2019-2020 F-150 SuperCrew (5 stars, the fewest F-150 campaigns, 9 and 11) |

The years I would check extra carefully: the 2019 Ram, the first year of the new body, with 30 campaigns and 1,497 complaints; the 2015-2016 Ram, with the most complaints and steering at the top; and the 2021-2022 F-150, with 29 and 23 campaigns.

## Pre-purchase checklist for these two trucks

Use this with my general pre-purchase inspection checklist.

1. Run the VIN on [NHTSA's recall lookup](https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls) . Re-check near purchase: several campaigns date from 2025 and 2026.

1. On a Ram from 2019 on, confirm whether it is the newer truck or the Classic. Their recalls differ.

1. On a diesel Ram, ask for records on the fuel pump, tone wheel and EGR cooler campaigns.

1. On a Ram, test steering assist at low speed and in parking lots. Steering leads the 2015-2017 complaints.

1. On an F-150, drive through every gear in traffic and on the highway. Note harsh, late or slipping shifts.

1. On a 3.5L EcoBoost F-150, check the brake pedal feel and the brake fluid level.

1. Open and close the tailgate several times, and drive with it latched over bumps.

1. Test the backup camera. Both trucks have many camera campaigns.

1. On a 4x4, engage 4WD in a safe open spot and watch for warning lights.

1. If it has towed, check the hitch, wiring plug and trailer brake controller, and run TxDMV Title Check for salvage or flood brands.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is the Ram 1500 or the F-150 more reliable?**

I do not publish reliability scores, and complaint totals rise with sales volume, so I compare years within each truck. In NHTSA data, the 2017 and 2020 Ram have the fewest campaigns (13 and 14), and the 2019 and 2020 F-150 have the fewest (9 and 11).

**Which gets better gas mileage?**

Among gas engines, the F-150 2.7L and 3.3L V6 reach 22 mpg combined. The Ram 3.0L diesel is the best in this comparison at up to 26 combined, and the F-150 hybrid reaches 25.

**What is the Ram 1500 Classic?**

It is the older body that kept being listed after the 2019 redesign. Transport Canada lists it for 2019 on with the same dimensions as the 2015-2018 Ram 1500, and NHTSA campaigns name it separately.

**Which tows more?**

Ford lists up to 14,000 lbs. for a 2021 F-150 in one specific configuration. I have not confirmed Ram figures from Stellantis' official site, so they are not listed. For any used truck, the door-jamb label decides.

**Which is safer in NHTSA crash tests?**

Both reach 5 stars overall in some versions. Every tested 2015-2018 Ram is 4 stars, and Ram crew cabs reach 5 stars from 2019. The F-150 is 5 stars in every tested version for 2015-2017 and 2021-2022, and the SuperCrew is 5 stars for 2018-2020.

**Which years have the most recalls?**

The 2019 Ram 1500 (30 campaigns) and the 2021 F-150 (29), each the first year of a new design.

**Does a diesel truck need an emissions test in Texas?**

No. Per TCEQ, diesel vehicles are not tested. Gas trucks are tested in Travis and Williamson counties, and in Bexar from November 1, 2026.
