For a used Toyota Sienna vs Honda Odyssey, both minivans earn 5 stars overall from NHTSA in every year I can show, so for most families the choice comes down to drive type and fuel. The Sienna is the only one of the two with all-wheel drive, and from 2021 it is hybrid-only, rated 35 to 36 mpg combined against 22 for the Odyssey's V6. If you want an Odyssey, the 2017 and the 2021-2022 have the quietest NHTSA records of the years here, and the 2018 and 2019 have by far the most complaints and recall campaigns. For a Sienna, the 2019 and 2020 are the quietest.

The evidence here is public data only: NHTSA recall, complaint and crash-test records pulled from api.nhtsa.gov on November 5, 2026, EPA fuel economy from fueleconomy.gov, and dimensions and weights from Transport Canada through NHTSA's vPIC database. The NHTSA data covers the 2015-2020 Sienna and the 2015-2022 Odyssey, so I only discuss recalls and complaints for those years. No owner reviews, no reliability scores and no prices.

## Sienna vs Odyssey at a glance

You can see each model's year-by-year data on the Toyota Sienna data page and the Honda Odyssey data page, or compare them side by side.

## Which years you are shopping

### Toyota Sienna

- **2015 to 2020: V6.** fueleconomy.gov lists a 3.5-liter V6 on regular gas, with 6-speed and 8-speed automatics, in front-wheel or all-wheel drive. Transport Canada files all of these years under a body record that starts in 2010.

- **2021 and newer: hybrid only.** The EPA rows switch to a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder hybrid with a continuously variable automatic, again in front-wheel or all-wheel drive. Transport Canada starts a new record in 2021, with a longer body. My NHTSA data does not cover these years, so run the VIN on any 2021 or newer Sienna.

### Honda Odyssey

Every Odyssey from 2015 to 2027 has a 3.5-liter V6 and front-wheel drive, with 6-, 9- and 10-speed automatics across the EPA listings. Check the exact year on [fueleconomy.gov](https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/findacar.shtml) . Transport Canada splits the years into three records: 2015-2017 (starting 2011), 2018-2020 (starting 2017, with new dimensions) and 2021 onward.

## NHTSA record by year

From NHTSA records pulled November 5, 2026. The recall column counts campaigns that list the model year; some cover only a build window or a converted van. "Unknown or other" is skipped when naming the top component.

### Toyota Sienna, 2015-2020

| Year | Recall campaigns | Complaints | Crash / fire complaints | Top named component (count) | NHTSA overall |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 2015 | 6 | 233 | 17 / 7 | Structure (61) | 5 stars |
| 2016 | 5 | 76 | 7 / 1 | Structure (27) | 5 stars |
| 2017 | 10 | 159 | 13 / 4 | Power train (39) | 5 stars |
| 2018 | 7 | 72 | 5 / 0 | Power train (20) | 5 stars |
| 2019 | 7 | 47 | 2 / 0 | Power train (8) | 5 stars |
| 2020 | 2 | 38 | 0 / 1 | Power train (8) | 5 stars |

### Honda Odyssey, 2015-2022

| Year | Recall campaigns | Complaints | Crash / fire complaints | Top named component (count) | NHTSA overall |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 2015 | 6 | 207 | 9 / 3 | Engine (54) | 5 stars |
| 2016 | 6 | 271 | 9 / 2 | Engine (93) | 5 stars |
| 2017 | 2 | 39 | 3 / 0 | Engine (10) | 5 stars |
| 2018 | 16 | 1,014 | 14 / 3 | Electrical system (264) | 5 stars |
| 2019 | 20 | 998 | 16 / 7 | Forward collision avoidance (241) | 5 stars |
| 2020 | 14 | 492 | 4 / 1 | Forward collision avoidance (187) | 5 stars |
| 2021 | 8 | 147 | 2 / 1 | Electrical system (56) | 5 stars |
| 2022 | 9 | 143 | 4 / 2 | Electrical system (37) | 5 stars |

NHTSA rates both drive versions of the Sienna and the front-wheel-drive Odyssey 4 stars for rollover in every year listed. Compare years within each model rather than across brands: complaint counts rise with sales volume and with the number of years a van has been on the road. My guide to [reading NHTSA complaint data](https://texas.huntautogroup.com/guides/how-to-read-nhtsa-complaint-data/) explains why. Complaints are unverified owner reports, not proof of a defect.

## The recalls that matter for families

These are the campaigns I would confirm first, using NHTSA's wording.

### Toyota Sienna

- **Power sliding door (16V858000), 2015-2016.** If the door cannot open when commanded, for example when it is frozen shut, it may later open unexpectedly, possibly while the van is moving. "Sliding door" appears in 50 of the 233 complaints for 2015.

- **Brake booster vacuum pump (18V211000), 2017.** A machining error may cause a sudden loss of brake assist.

- **Fuel pump (20V682000 and 20V012000), 2017-2020.** Two campaigns cover the fuel pump. "Fuel pump" appears in 4 to 7 complaints a year from 2017 to 2020.

- **Seat belts and air bags.** Front belt height adjusters may tear in a crash (16V197000, 2016, built February 15-19 only). Second-row grips may detach when the curtain air bag deploys (14V757000, 2015). Door welds may affect air bag sensors (19V318000, 2019).

- **Alloy wheels (18V130000), 2018.** One lot of wheels may crack from an impact.

### Honda Odyssey

- **Second-row seats, 2015-2017 and 2022.** Four campaigns (18V170000, 17V725000, 16V933000, 16V932000) cover second-row seats that may not latch, may tip forward under braking or may slide unexpectedly. A fifth (21V432000) covers deformed second-row seat rail locks on the 2022. If you will move these seats for car seats, these come first.

- **Power sliding door latches (18V795000), 2018-2019,** and **sliding door handle cables that may freeze (20V437000), 2018-2020.**

- **Seat belts and air bags.** The third-row center belt may not latch (17V397000, 2018), nor the front buckles (23V158000, 2018-2020). Two 2026 campaigns cover side air bags that may deploy unexpectedly (26V227000) and the front passenger occupant sensor (26V332000) on 2018-2022 vans. A van that looked clean last year may have open recalls now.

- **Rearview camera, 2018-2022.** Five campaigns cover a camera image that may not display. "Camera" appears in 196, 218 and 189 complaints for 2018, 2019 and 2020.

- **Engine and transmission, 2018-2019.** Connecting rod bearings may wear and seize (23V751000). The transmission control unit may reboot and shift to Park (19V299000). The 2019 also has a timing belt campaign (19V298000).

- **Rear brake calipers (18V777000), 2018-2019,** and **fuel pump (23V858000), 2015-2022.**

### Wheelchair-van conversions

Campaigns from Braun, Vantage and Rollx, on both models, apply only to vans converted for wheelchair access.

Check any VIN on [NHTSA's recalls page](https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls) , and read [how to check recalls before buying a used car](https://texas.huntautogroup.com/guides/how-to-check-recalls-before-buying-a-used-car/) .

## What owners report most

**Sienna 2015-2016:** Structure leads (61 and 27). "Sliding door" appears in 50 complaints for 2015 and 11 for 2016.

**Sienna 2017-2020:** Power train leads every year. "Transmission" appears in 38 complaints for 2017, then 14, 11 and 6.

**Odyssey 2015-2017:** Engine leads. In 2016, "check engine" appears in 41 complaints and "sliding door" in 22.

**Odyssey 2018-2020:** The busiest years. In 2018, "camera" appears in 196 complaints, "transmission" in 147 and "stall" in 111. In 2019, forward collision avoidance (241) and lane departure (171) are top components.

**Odyssey 2021-2022:** Totals fall to 147 and 143. Electrical system leads, and "brake" (22 and 28) and "battery" (19 and 16) are the most common terms.

## EPA MPG by engine

From [fueleconomy.gov](https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/findacar.shtml) . Ranges cover the versions listed.

| Model | Years | Engine | Drive | City / Hwy / Combined |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Sienna | 2015-2020 | 3.5L V6 | FWD or AWD | 16-19 / 23-27 / 19-22 |
| Sienna | 2021-2026 | 2.5L hybrid | FWD or AWD | 34-36 / 36 / 35-36 |
| Odyssey | 2015-2027 | 3.5L V6 | FWD | 19 / 27-28 / 22 |

The hybrid Sienna is the clear efficiency pick.

## Size and weight

From Transport Canada through NHTSA vPIC, rounded to inches and pounds.

| Model | Years (record start) | Length | Width | Height | Wheelbase | Curb weight |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Sienna | 2015-2020 (2010) | 200 in | 78 in | 71 in | 119 in | 4,277-4,663 lb |
| Sienna | 2021-2026 (2021) | 204 in | 78 in | 70 in | 120 in | 4,621-4,740 lb |
| Odyssey | 2015-2017 (2011) | 203 in | 79 in | 69 in | 118 in | 4,400-4,557 lb |
| Odyssey | 2018-2020 (2017) | 204 in | 78 in | 68 in | 118 in | 4,418-4,511 lb |
| Odyssey | 2021-2026 (2021) | 205 in | 79 in | 68 in | 118 in | 4,548 lb |

## Texas notes for minivan families

**Heat and rear AC.** A minivan has a lot of cabin to cool, and the kids sit far from the front vents. Test the AC from a hot start and feel the rear vents for the third row, not just the dash. [fueleconomy.gov's hot weather page](https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/hotweather.shtml) notes AC use can cut a conventional vehicle's fuel economy by more than 25% in very hot conditions, especially on short trips. My [used cars and Texas heat guide](https://texas.huntautogroup.com/guides/used-cars-and-texas-heat/) has the full list.

**I-35 family road trips.** On paper, the Odyssey rates 27 to 28 highway and the Sienna V6 23 to 27. The hybrid Sienna rates 36. If the van will run Austin to San Antonio or to the coast every few weekends, that difference adds up.

**Flood history.** Check for silt, rust and damp carpet under the second and third rows and in the rear cargo well. Read [how to spot a flood-damaged car](https://texas.huntautogroup.com/guides/how-to-spot-a-flood-damaged-car/) and check the title brand with [TxDMV Title Check](https://www.txdmv.gov/motorists/buying-or-selling-a-vehicle/title-check-look-before-you-buy) .

**Emissions counties.**[TCEQ](https://www.tceq.texas.gov/airquality/mobilesource/vim/overview.html) requires a yearly emissions test before registration for gasoline vehicles 2 through 24 years old in Travis and Williamson counties, and in Bexar County starting November 1, 2026. Hays, Comal, Guadalupe and Caldwell are not on the list. More in my [inspection and emissions guide](https://texas.huntautogroup.com/guides/texas-vehicle-inspection-and-emissions-rules/) .

## Which one I would pick, by family

My opinion, based only on the data shown here.

- **You want the best fuel economy:** a 2021 or newer Sienna hybrid, at 35 to 36 combined. My NHTSA data does not cover those years, so run the VIN and get an inspection.

- **You want all-wheel drive:** a Sienna. The EPA lists the Odyssey as front-wheel drive only. Among the V6 years, I would start with a 2019 or 2020 Sienna (47 and 38 complaints; 2020 has only two campaigns).

- **You want an older Odyssey:** the 2017, with two campaigns and 39 complaints, the quietest Odyssey year here. Confirm the second-row seat campaign (17V725000).

- **You want a newer Odyssey:** a 2021 or 2022, with far fewer complaints than 2018-2020. Confirm the 2026 air bag campaigns.

- **Years I would check extra carefully:** the 2018 and 2019 Odyssey (16 and 20 campaigns, around 1,000 complaints each), the 2015 Sienna (the most Sienna complaints, sliding doors in the lead) and the 2017 Sienna (10 campaigns, transmission complaints leading).

## Pre-purchase checklist for a used Sienna or Odyssey

Use this with my general pre-purchase inspection checklist and test drive checklist.

1. Run the VIN on [NHTSA's recall lookup](https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls) and re-check close to purchase. Several Odyssey campaigns are from 2026.

1. Open and close each power sliding door at least five times, from the key fob, the dash button and the handle. Each should latch fully and the warning light should go off.

1. Move every second-row seat through all positions and latch it back in. Pull on it to confirm it is locked.

1. Fold and raise the third row, and buckle every third-row belt, including the center.

1. Run the AC on max from a hot start, front and rear, for the whole drive.

1. Back up with the rearview camera several times, especially on a 2018-2022 Odyssey.

1. Drive in traffic and on the highway; note harsh shifts, hesitation or stalling.

1. On a hybrid Sienna, have the inspector scan the hybrid system, not just the engine.

1. If it is a wheelchair conversion, check the converter's own campaigns.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is a used Sienna or Odyssey more reliable?**

NHTSA does not rate reliability. Within each model, the 2019-2020 Sienna and the 2017 and 2021-2022 Odyssey have the fewest complaints in this data. Inspect the specific van either way.

**Does the Honda Odyssey have all-wheel drive?**

Not in the EPA listings for 2015 to 2027. Every Odyssey listed is front-wheel drive. The Sienna is listed with front-wheel or all-wheel drive in every year.

**Which gets better gas mileage?**

The 2021 and newer Sienna hybrid, at 35 to 36 combined on fueleconomy.gov. Among V6 vans, the Odyssey rates 22 combined and the 2015-2020 Sienna 19 to 22.

**What are the worst years for a used Odyssey in NHTSA data?**

The 2018 and 2019 have the most complaints (1,014 and 998) and the most campaigns (16 and 20). Rearview camera, transmission and driver-assist topics lead.

**Do these minivans need an emissions test in Texas?**

Gasoline vehicles 2 through 24 years old need one in Travis and Williamson counties, and in Bexar County from November 1, 2026, per TCEQ.
