How to Become an Uber Driver in Texas: Step by Step

How to become an Uber driver in Texas: age and vehicle rules, background check, rideshare insurance law, AUS and SAT airport rules, taxes and busy times.

How to Become an Uber Driver in Texas: Step by Step

To become an Uber driver in Texas, you need to be at least 25 with a valid US driver's license and one year of US driving experience, a 4-door car 15 years old or newer that meets Uber's rules, Texas registration and insurance, and a clean result on the screening Uber runs on your driving record and criminal history. You sign up in the Uber Driver app, upload your documents, pass the check and start driving. Most of the work is in the details: Texas rideshare insurance law, airport queue rules at AUS and SAT, taxes, and learning when your city is busy.

This guide covers the steps for a rideshare driver in Austin, San Antonio and the towns between them. Everything below comes from Uber's official pages, Texas statutes, the airports and the IRS, read on November 5, 2026. Uber can change its rules at any time, so confirm them in the app before you spend money on a car.

Step 1: Check that you qualify as a driver

Uber's requirements page lists these for new drivers in the US:

Requirement What Uber says
Age At least 25 years old
Experience At least one year of licensed driving experience in the US
License Valid US driver's license
Vehicle Eligible 4-door vehicle (rules vary by region)
Documents Proof of vehicle insurance, vehicle registration, driver profile photo
Screening Online screening that reviews your driving record and criminal history

Texas law sets a lower floor than Uber. The state's rideshare law, Occupations Code Chapter 2402, says a driver must be at least 18. Uber's own rule of 25 is stricter, and Uber's rule is the one that decides whether you can sign up.

New to Texas? You must get a Texas driver license within 90 days of moving here and register your vehicle within 30 days, according to TxDMV. See new to Texas car registration.

Step 2: Make sure your car meets Uber's rules in Austin and San Antonio

Uber publishes the same core vehicle rules on its Austin vehicle requirements page and its San Antonio vehicle requirements page:

Rule UberX UberXL
Vehicle age 15 years old or newer 15 years old or newer
Doors 4 doors that open independently 4 doors that open independently
Seats 5 factory-installed seats and seat belts 7 factory-installed seats and seat belts
Windows and AC Working Working
Title No salvage, rebuilt or total-loss titles Same
Condition Good condition, no cosmetic damage, no commercial branding Same
Not allowed Vans, box trucks, taxis, government or marked cars, aftermarket seating changes Same

Other points from the same pages:

  • Uber accepts official and temporary registration documents, and the car does not have to be registered in your name.
  • Uber Comfort requires a 4.85 rating, at least 100 completed trips and a car with more legroom than compact UberX cars.
  • Premier requires a luxury vehicle with a leather interior that is 6 years old or newer, plus a 4.85 rating over 250 trips.
  • If your title status changes, you must tell Uber and stop using the car.

Texas law adds its own floor. Under Section 2402.111, a rideshare vehicle must meet Texas inspection law requirements, have four doors and carry no more than eight people including the driver.

If you still need a car, read buying a used car for Uber or Lyft in Texas for what to check and the top 10 used cars for Uber drivers in Austin for model ideas.

Step 3: Get Texas title, registration and insurance in order

Title and registration

  • In a private sale, you must title the car in your name within 30 days of the sale, per TxDMV. Late filing adds a penalty. See Texas title transfer step by step.
  • The annual registration fee for a passenger vehicle of 6,000 lbs. or less is $50.75, plus $1 for insurance verification, plus local county fees. The local fee is $11.50 in Travis, Williamson, Caldwell, Comal and Guadalupe counties, $10 in Hays and $21.50 in Bexar, per the TxDMV fee chart.
  • Texas uses Two Steps, One Sticker. In an emissions county, you pass the emissions test first, then renew, and the registration sticker is the only windshield sticker, per TxDMV.
  • Emissions testing applies in Travis and Williamson counties, and in Bexar County starting November 1, 2026, according to TCEQ. Hays, Comal, Guadalupe and Caldwell are not on the list.

Read how to register a used car in Texas and Texas vehicle inspection and emissions rules for the full process.

Insurance

Every car registered in Texas needs at least 30/60/25 liability coverage: $30,000 per injured person, $60,000 per accident and $25,000 for property damage, according to the Texas Department of Insurance.

Rideshare driving adds a second layer. Texas Insurance Code Chapter 1954 sets minimum coverage for transportation network company (TNC) drivers:

When Minimum coverage under Chapter 1954
Logged on and available, waiting for a request (Sec. 1954.052) $50,000 per person and $100,000 per incident for bodily injury or death, $25,000 for property damage
On a prearranged ride (Sec. 1954.053) $1 million total per incident for death, bodily injury and property damage

Section 1954.101 requires the company to tell you in writing, before you accept a ride, what insurance it provides and that your personal auto policy may not cover you while you are logged on or on a ride. In plain terms: ask your own insurer, before your first trip, whether your policy excludes rideshare use and whether it offers a rideshare endorsement. Get the answer in writing. See Texas car insurance minimums.

Step 4: Sign up and upload your documents

  1. Download the Uber Driver app and create your driver account.
  2. Choose your city (Austin or San Antonio).
  3. Upload your driver's license, proof of insurance, vehicle registration and a profile photo. Uber shows the full list for your region during sign-up.
  4. Add your vehicle details. The app checks the year, make and model against local rules.
  5. Consent to the screening.

Keep copies of every document. Your insurance and registration expire, and you will need to upload new ones when they renew.

Step 5: Pass the background check

Uber says its online screening reviews your driving record and criminal history. Texas law spells out the minimum that every rideshare company must check. Under Section 2402.107, before you can log in, the company must:

  • Run local, state and national criminal background checks, including commercial databases and the national and state sex offender websites.
  • Review your driving record.
  • Repeat the checks every year.

The same section disqualifies a driver who has:

  • More than three moving violations, as classified by DPS, in the preceding three years, or certain serious violations such as reckless driving or driving without a valid license.
  • A conviction in the preceding seven years for listed offenses, including driving while intoxicated, using a vehicle to commit a felony, fraud, theft and violent acts.

Uber can apply stricter standards than the law. If your record has something on it, read the statute and ask Uber support before you buy a car for driving.

Step 6: Learn the airport rules at AUS and SAT

Airport trips follow special rules. The airport and Uber each publish their own.

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS)

Topic Rule
Waiting area 9220 Rental Car Lane, separate from the cell phone lot (Uber AUS driver information)
Queue Being closer to the terminal gives no advantage. You can lose your place by going offline, leaving the lot, declining several requests in a row or cancelling several rides.
Pickups Rental car facility pick-up area, Level G. Uber trips pick up from the Red and Yellow zones.
Drop-offs Departures level (upper level) curb (AUS ground transportation)
Riders AUS directs arriving riders to rideshare pickup under the Consolidated Rental Car Facility, behind the Red Garage

San Antonio International Airport (SAT)

Topic Rule
Waiting area First-in, first-out (FIFO) lot in the former public cell phone lot at Airport Blvd and Northern Blvd (Uber SAT driver information)
Queue You must be inside the FIFO zone to get airport requests. Being closer to the terminal does not move you up.
Pickups Arrivals (lower) level outside Terminal A, outer lanes. The airport's own page says approved rideshare companies meet riders on the outer commercial curb, lower level of Terminal A (SAT rideshare page).
App Uber says the driver app must stay open the whole time you are on airport property.
Citations Uber says it will not pay citations drivers get, and violations can restrict airport access.

Airport layouts change with construction. Check the in-app directions each time.

Step 7: Understand taxes and the IRS mileage rate

As an Uber driver, you are working for yourself. The IRS Gig Economy Tax Center says you must report gig income on your tax return even if you did not get a 1099 form.

Uber's tax information page and help center say Uber provides a yearly tax summary with your earnings and the miles you drove online. Uber notes the summary is not an official tax document. Official forms are usually available by January 31 in the Driver app and on drivers.uber.com.

IRS standard mileage rate for 2026. The IRS changed the business rate in the middle of the year, per its standard mileage rates page:

Period Business rate
January 1 to June 30, 2026 72.5 cents per mile
July 1 to December 31, 2026 76 cents per mile

Practical habits:

  1. Keep a mileage log for every work mile, including miles driving to your first pickup if your tax preparer says they count.
  2. Save receipts for phone, car washes, tolls and other costs.
  3. Set money aside from each payout for taxes.

This is general information, not tax advice. Rules about which miles count and how to deduct them depend on your situation, so talk to a tax professional.

Step 8: Find the busy times with Uber's own tools

I am not going to give you a list of "best hours." Demand changes by week, weather and events, and any fixed number would be a guess. Use Uber's tools instead.

Uber's help article, when and where are the most riders, says:

  • In most cities, weekends, rush hours and evening hours have more trip requests than other times.
  • The Hourly Trends feature in the Driver app shows a chart of when your city is expected to be busiest.
  • The heat map in the Driver app compares the number of trip requests across areas. Uber says it is for informational purposes only.

How I would use them: check Hourly Trends the night before to plan your shift, open the heat map before you log on, and watch the event calendar below. Then keep notes for a few weeks on what actually worked for you.

Recurring demand drivers in Austin and San Antonio

These events pull large crowds. Dates come from each event's official site.

Event Where Dates (official)
SXSW 2027 Downtown Austin March 15-21, 2027 (sxsw.com)
Fiesta San Antonio 2027 San Antonio April 15-25, 2027 (Fiesta FAQ)
Austin City Limits Music Festival Zilker Park, Austin 2026 edition was October 2-4 and October 9-11; check aclfestival.com for 2027
Formula 1 United States Grand Prix Circuit of The Americas, Austin 2026 race weekend was October 23-25 (formula1.com); check for 2027
Texas Longhorns football DKR Stadium, Austin 2026 home finale vs. Arkansas, November 21 (texaslonghorns.com)
Texas State Bobcats football UFCU Stadium, San Marcos November 14 vs. Fresno State and November 21 vs. Washington State, 2026 (txstatebobcats.com)
San Antonio Spurs Frost Bank Center, San Antonio; some games at Moody Center, Austin 2026-27 season opened October 20, 2026; Austin games February 26 and 28, 2027 (nba.com/spurs)

Big events also move the airport. AUS publishes travel advisories before events such as ACL Fest and the Formula 1 race, which tells you when to expect heavy airport traffic.

Event weekends also bring road closures and special pickup zones. Read the event's transportation page and follow the in-app pickup pins.

Safety: what the law and the app give you

  • Zero tolerance. Texas law requires rideshare companies to have a policy that prohibits a logged-in driver from any amount of intoxication (Section 2402.106).
  • Safety Toolkit. Uber's driver safety page and newsroom describe a shield icon on the map screen with an emergency button that shows your location, car and plate to share with 911.
  • RideCheck. Uber says it uses phone sensors and GPS to detect a possible crash, a long unexpected stop or a route change, then checks in with you.
  • Record My Ride. Uber describes an option to record trips with your phone's camera and microphone.
  • Privacy. Uber says it masks phone numbers between drivers and riders.

Common-sense habits help too: confirm the rider's name before they get in, keep your doors locked until you do, and end any trip that feels unsafe. And in summer, keep water in the car and watch your engine temperature.

First-week checklist

  1. Confirm your car's year, doors, seats and title status meet Uber's rules in the app.
  2. Have your Texas title, registration and current sticker in order.
  3. Call your insurer about rideshare use and get the answer in writing.
  4. Finish sign-up and pass the background check.
  5. Mount your phone where you can see it without looking away from the road.
  6. Clean the car inside and out, and test the AC on max.
  7. Drive the AUS or SAT airport loop once without a rider to learn the waiting lot and pickup zones.
  8. Check Hourly Trends and the heat map before each shift.
  9. Start a mileage log on day one.
  10. Write down which hours and areas worked for you, and compare after two weeks.
