The best used cars for Uber in Austin are 4-door sedans and SUVs that clearly meet Uber's vehicle rules, burn as little fuel as possible in stop-and-go traffic and have a short NHTSA recall record. By those measures, my top pick is a 2020 to 2022 Toyota Camry Hybrid LE, rated 52 mpg combined by the EPA. The rest of the top 10 covers the Prius, Corolla Hybrid, Elantra Hybrid, Accord Hybrid, Sonata Hybrid, RAV4 Hybrid, gas Corolla, Civic and, for UberXL, the Highlander Hybrid.
Every number here comes from fueleconomy.gov, NHTSA data pulled on November 5, 2026, and the manufacturers. No prices and no earnings estimates, because those change by the week and by the car.
How I picked the 10
I used four filters, in this order:
- Uber's vehicle rules. Uber's Austin vehicle requirements page says an UberX car must be 15 years old or newer, with 4 independently opening doors, 5 factory-installed seats and seat belts, working windows and AC, and no salvage, rebuilt or total-loss title. UberXL needs 7 factory seats. Every car on this list is a 4-door with factory seating that fits those rules.
- EPA fuel economy. Rideshare means lots of city miles. I ranked mostly by the EPA combined rating and paid attention to the city number.
- NHTSA recall and complaint record for the model line, model years 2018 to 2022, plus the NHTSA overall safety rating.
- Seating and cargo. Riders sit in the back and bring suitcases from AUS. I noted rear legroom and trunk space where the maker publishes it.
I limited the model years to 2018 to 2022 so the cars are well inside Uber's age limit for years to come and NHTSA has a few years of data on them.

Three cautions before you read too much into this table:
- These are model lines. NHTSA can list a hybrid under its own model name, so the hybrid version of a car may have a slightly different record. Always run the exact VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
- Complaints are unverified owner reports, and popular cars collect more of them. Use them to see which systems to inspect, not as a reliability score. See how to read NHTSA complaint data.
- A recall on record is not an open recall. Many are already fixed. Recall repairs are normally free at a franchised dealer of the brand. See how to check recalls before buying a used car.
1. Toyota Camry Hybrid (2018-2022)
- EPA: 51/53/52 for the LE; 44/47/46 for the SE, XLE and XSE.
- Space: Toyota lists 38.0 inches of rear legroom and a 15.1 cubic-foot trunk for the 2022 Camry (2022 Camry brochure).
- NHTSA: 5 stars overall every year. The Camry line has one recall campaign each in 2021 and 2022, the lowest of any midsize sedan here.
- Watch for: the 2018 Camry line had the most complaints, led by power train and brakes.
Note the trim: the LE is rated 6 mpg combined higher than the other hybrid trims. More data on the Toyota Camry page.
2. Toyota Prius (2018-2022)
- EPA: 54/50/52 for the standard Prius; 58/53/56 for the Prius Eco; 51 or 52/47 or 48/49 or 50 for the AWD version (2019-2022).
- NHTSA: 5 stars overall. The lowest complaint counts of any car on this list in every model year.
- Trade-off: a hatchback with less rear headroom and a lower seat than a midsize sedan, which some riders notice.
If fuel is your biggest cost, the Prius Eco has the highest EPA combined rating on this list. See the Toyota Prius page.
3. Toyota Corolla Hybrid (2020-2022)
- EPA: 53/52/52.
- NHTSA: 5 stars overall. The Corolla line had no recall campaigns for 2022 in our data.
- Trade-off: a compact sedan, so the back seat and trunk are smaller than a Camry's. Fine for one or two riders with carry-on bags.
The Corolla Hybrid matches the Camry Hybrid LE's combined rating in a smaller car. See the Toyota Corolla page.
4. Hyundai Elantra Hybrid (2021-2022)
- EPA: 49/52/50 for most trims; 53/56/54 for the Blue trim.
- NHTSA: the Elantra line earns 5 stars overall for 2021 and 2022. It had 6 recall campaigns in 2021 and 5 in 2022, more than the Toyotas on this list.
- Watch for: in 2021 the most common complaint categories were forward collision avoidance and electrical system; in 2022, seat belts.
The Elantra Hybrid Blue has the highest combined rating of any sedan here. Run the VIN to confirm every recall has been done. See the Hyundai Elantra page.
5. Honda Accord Hybrid (2018-2022)
- EPA: 47/47/47 (2018); 48/47 or 48/48 (2019-2021); 48/47/47 (2022); 44/41/43 for the 2021-2022 Sport and Touring.
- Space: Honda lists 40.4 inches of rear legroom and 16.7 cubic feet of trunk space, with no trunk loss for the hybrid (2018 Accord specifications).
- NHTSA: 5 stars overall. The Accord line had 4 to 6 recall campaigns per year, and the 2018 model year had 1,899 complaints, led by engine and forward collision avoidance.
The Accord Hybrid has the roomiest back seat of the sedans here, which riders appreciate on long airport runs. I would favor 2020 to 2022 over 2018. Compare it in depth in Toyota Camry vs Honda Accord.
6. Hyundai Sonata Hybrid (2020-2022)
- EPA: 45/51/47 for most trims; 50/54/52 for the Blue trim.
- NHTSA: 5 stars overall. The Sonata line had 4, 4 and 3 recall campaigns for 2020 to 2022, and fewer complaints than the Camry line in 2020 and 2021.
- Note: the 2018-2019 Sonata Hybrid is a different, less efficient version (39 to 40/44 to 46/41 to 42), so check the model year.
The Sonata Hybrid Blue ties the Camry Hybrid LE at 52 combined. See the Hyundai Sonata page.
7. Toyota RAV4 Hybrid (2019-2022)
- EPA: 41/38/40, AWD only.
- Space: about 37.5 cubic feet behind the rear seat and 37.8 inches of rear legroom, per the 2022 RAV4 brochure.
- NHTSA: 5 stars overall. One recall campaign each in 2021 and 2022. The 2019 line had 886 complaints, led by fuel/propulsion system and engine.
This is the pick if your riders often have big suitcases or you want an SUV for your own life. It uses more fuel than the sedans above. See Toyota Corolla Cross vs RAV4 and the Toyota RAV4 page.
8. Toyota Corolla, gas (2020-2022)
- EPA: 30/38/33 (1.8L); 31/40/34 (2.0L).
- NHTSA: 5 stars overall; low recall counts in 2021 and 2022.
- Why it is here: not every driver wants a hybrid system to maintain as the car ages. A gas Corolla is a simple, efficient compact.
The trade-off is about 18 to 19 mpg combined compared with the Corolla Hybrid. Most Corollas in these years use a CVT, so read CVT transmissions: what used buyers should know.
9. Honda Civic sedan, gas (2018-2022)
- EPA: up to 32/42/36 with the 1.5L turbo; 29 to 31/37 to 40/32 to 35 with the 2.0L.
- NHTSA: 5 stars overall for the sedan. The Civic line had 4 to 6 recall campaigns per year.
- Watch for: steering was the top complaint category in 2016 through 2019, 2021 and 2022, and the 2022 line had 734 steering complaints out of 886. Test the steering carefully on any 2022 Civic and run the VIN.
The Civic sedan has the best gas-only rating on this list. See the Honda Civic page.
10. Toyota Highlander Hybrid (2020-2022), for UberXL
- EPA: 36/35/36 FWD; 35/35/35 AWD; 35/34/35 AWD Limited and Platinum.
- NHTSA: 5 stars overall. The Highlander line had 4 to 5 recall campaigns per year, with power train the top complaint category.
- UberXL check: Uber requires 7 factory-installed seats and seat belts for UberXL. Count the factory belts in the specific Highlander you are looking at, because seating depends on configuration.
This is the most efficient 3-row choice among the models I compared. See the Toyota Highlander page.
Which one I would buy, and why
If I were buying a used car today to drive Uber in Austin, I would buy a 2020, 2021 or 2022 Toyota Camry Hybrid LE. My reasons, all from the data above:
- Fuel. 52 mpg combined and 51 in the city, the best pairing of efficiency and size on this list.
- Riders. A midsize back seat with 38 inches of legroom and a 15.1 cubic-foot trunk for airport bags.
- Record. The Camry line's recall campaigns drop from 8 in 2018 to 3 in 2020 and 1 each in 2021 and 2022, with complaints falling in step.
- Rules. It is a 4-door sedan with 5 factory seats, so it fits Uber's UberX rules with no gray areas, and a 2020 to 2022 car stays inside the 15-year limit for a long time.
My second choice would be a 2018 to 2022 Prius, which has the best combined rating and the lowest complaint numbers here, if I could accept the smaller hatchback body. For UberXL, I would look at a Highlander Hybrid with 7 confirmed factory seat belts.
That is my opinion from public data, not a promise about any individual car. The specific car's history and inspection matter more than the model's average.
Before you buy any of these for rideshare
- Confirm the car in the Uber Driver app before you pay, using the exact year, make and model.
- Run TxDMV Title Check. Uber does not allow salvage, rebuilt or total-loss titles for rides, and TxDMV Title Check uses NMVTIS to show those brands.
- Run the VIN for open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
- Get a pre-purchase inspection, including the hybrid system on a hybrid. See the pre-purchase inspection checklist.
- Test the AC hard. Uber requires working AC, and Austin summers are long. Read used cars and Texas heat.
- Call your insurer about rideshare use. Texas Insurance Code Chapter 1954 sets rideshare coverage minimums, and your personal policy may not cover you while logged on.
